The Froid/Lake Red Hawks overcame a strong first quarter by Bainville and were able to edge the Bulldogs, 40-32, in a defensive battle on Saturday, Jan. 6. The Bulldogs earned a 17-3 lead in the first quarter as a triangle-and-two defense frustrated the Red Hawks throughout the period. The scoring of Charles Butikofer led the Bulldogs to a 6-2 lead and then Alex Strickland connected on a three-pointer.

A three-pointer by C. Butikofer, a put-back by Samuel Butikofer and three free tosses by Reese Harmon put the Bulldogs up by 14 points to end the opening quarter.

Trailing by a 21-6 score, the Red Hawks accounted for the final 16 points of the half for a 22-21 lead. A drive by Joseph Robertson and four free throws by Mason Dethman got the comeback going. Landon Kelm then hit a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper to close the margin to 21-17.

Nate Stentoft connected on four free throws for a 2121 deadlock. The Red Hawks took the lead on a free toss by Dethman.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter on a good note when Strickland hit a turnaround shot. Froid/Lake managed the final four points of the period on a 15-footer by Cody Olson and two free throws by Dethman for a 2825 lead.

The Red Hawks increased the margin to 32-25 on hoops by Dethman and Stentoft to open the fourth quarter. A three-pointer by S. Butikofer cut the gap to 32-28, but a 14-footer by Stentoft and free throws by Robertson and Kelm put the score at 37-29 with 2:17 remaining.

The scoring of C. Butikofer pulled the Bulldogs to 39-32, but Bainville couldn’t get any closer in the District 2C contest.

Dethman led the Red Hawks with 17 points. Also scoring were Kelm with nine, Stentoft with eight, Robertson with four and Olson with two.

Scoring for Bainville were C. Butikofer with 11, S. Butikofer with nine, Strickland with seven and Harmon with five points.
