Bainville Advances By Taking Second At District Tourney
The Bainville Bulldogs came away with the second- place trophy from the District 2C volleyball tournament held in Culbertson on Thursday, Oct. 30, and Friday, Oct. 31.
Bainville won matches against Brockton, Culbertson and Savage during the tournament while dropping two hotly-contested matches against Richey/Lambert.
The Eastern C divisional tournament starts on Thursday, Nov. 6, in Sidney.
During Friday afternoon action, the Bulldogs came up short against Richey/Lambert by a 25-13, 21-25, 25-23, 2125, 15-17, final.
The hard hitting of Casey Myers, Hailey Berwick and Jaylynn Bjorge led the Bulldogs to a 14-6 advantage in the first set. Bainville increased the gap to 18-7 on a back-row kill by Berwick and a spike by Addison Hansen.
With the score at 24-13, Bainville ended the opening set on a kill by Bjorge.
Down by a 19-17 margin in the second set, the Bulldogs scored on a kill by Berwick. The Fusion moved ahead, 2118, on kills by Brooke Lien and Jolee Klempel. After kills by Myers and Bjorge kept Bainville close at 22-21, the Fusion accounted for the last three points on a net play by Chelsi Hill, a kill by Klempel and an ace by Brooke Spinner.
The Bulldogs held a 2119 lead in the third set, but Richey/Lambert grabbed a 23-21 advantage on kills by Addison Foss.
Bainville stepped up with the last four points of the set on a kill by Bjorge and the serving of Chandi Johnson.
A pair of kills by Foss ended the fourth set to give the Fusion a 25-21 victory.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Bulldogs gained an early 6-4 lead on a kill by Berwick and an ace by Myers. With the score even at 8-8, the Fusion struck for four straight points on aces by Jacqueline Barnhart and a kill by Foss.
Bainville fought back to 1212 on three kills by Berwick and a block by Bjorge, but the Fusion moved back ahead on a spike by Foss.
The Bulldogs gained a 14-13 lead on a kill by Berwick and a tip by Myers, but Richey/ Lambert saved two match points. The Fusion scored on a spike by Lien and a serve by Tayen Carda down the stretch for the 17-15 win.
Savage
The Bulldogs bounced back with a tough victory over Savage. Bainville won by a 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, margin.
Ahead by a 22-19 margin in the first set, the Bulldogs added two more points on a kill by Bjorge and an ace by Johnna Ryder.
Savage scored on a block by KD Lyons, but Bainville ended the set with a block by Butikofer.
A tip by Lila Butikofer and a kill by Hansen got the Bulldogs off to a strong start in the second set. The Bulldogs went on to lead by a 22-12 margin.
After Savage closed the gap to 24-18, Berwick accounted for a kill to end the set.
The net play of Lyons helped Savage take a 20-14 lead in the third set.
A pair of kills by Mylee Reuter put the Warriors up by a 24-19 advantage.
The net play of Berwick led the Bulldogs back to 24-23 until Savage took the set on a block by Reuter.
A kill by Bjorge and a block by Johnson helped Bainville earn a 20-16 advantage in the fourth set.
The Warriors fought back to 23-20 on a kill by Miley Pilgeram and an ace by Lyons, but Bainville held on as a block by Hansen ended the match.
Richey/Lambert
In the second tough battle against Richey/Lambert of the day, the Bulldogs lost by a 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 17-25, 9-15 final.
After dropping the first set, the Bulldogs trailed by a 2421 margin in the second set until kills by Bjorge, Johnson and Myers tied the match.
The Fusion went ahead 2524, but Bainville won the set on two kills by Berwick and an ace by Myers.
Kills by Berwick led Bainville to a 17-15 lead in the third set, A tip by Myers and a kill by Johnson put the lead at 2118.
The Fusion battled back to 23-21 on a pair of kills by Klempel, but Bainville then ended the set on a tip by Butikofer and a kill by Berwick.
After Richey/Lambert won the fourth set to force a fifth set, the Fusion took leads of 7-1 and 10-3 in the deciding set.
Down by an 11-4 margin, the Bulldogs fought back to 12-7 on kills by Myers, Bjorge and Berwick. Richey/Lambert took a 14-7 lead, but a kill by Berwick kept Bainville alive at 14-9. The Fusion earned match point on a kill by Klempel.
