A fast start helped the Bainville Bulldogs punch a ticket to the divisional tournament and a berth in the district championship game when Bainville’s girls downed Savage by a 44-35 final on Thursday, Feb. 15.

It was the first time that the Bulldogs qualified for the Eastern C girls’ basketball tournament since 2006 and the first time the Bulldogs made the district title game since 1998.

The Bulldogs set the tone early with the last 13 points of the opening quarter including two three-pointers by Elsie Wilson, a basket on an inbounds play by Tally Berwick, an inside shot by Wilson and a three-point play by an inspired Brecklyn Pippenger for a 15-3 lead to end the period.

Miah Pippenger scored for the Bulldogs to open the second quarter, but Savage fought its way back to 18-10 on the scoring of Cambry Conradsen, Taylor Conradsen and Karley McPherson.

Wilson hit a baseline shot to put the Bulldogs up 20-10 at the half.

The Warriors kept battling back in the third quarter as two free throws by McPherson, an inside shot by Brooke Reuter and a three-pointer by Aspen Peterson made it a 2621 game. B. Pippenger ended the period with a pair of free throws for a 28-21 margin.

Wilson got the Bulldogs off to a good start in the fourth quarter by firing in a three-pointer to put the lead back to 10 points.

Savage closed the gap to eight points on a couple occasions later in the quarter, but a drive by M. Pippenger and free throws by T. Berwick kept the Bulldogs rolling.

Savage struck on two three-pointers by T. Conradsen, but four points by Hailey Berwick and a pair of free tosses by B. Pippenger produced a 44-34 advantage in the final minute.

Top scorers for Bainville were Wilson with 13 and B. Pippenger with 11 points. Also scoring were H. Berwick with nine, M. Pippenger with six and T. Berwick with five points.

Wilson grabbed eight rebounds.

Leading Savage’s attack were Peterson with 11 and T. Conradsen with eight points.
