Cowboys Edge Froid/Lake, 45-43

The Culbertson Cowboys fought off Froid/Lake, 45-43, in District 2C basketball action on Thursday, Dec. 21.

The Cowboys held a 3431 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Still ahead by a 38-36 margin, the Cowboys increased their lead to 41-36 on a three-pointer by Nyreece Halvorson with 4:21 remaining.

After Froid/Lake’s Mason Dethman scored on a drive, a basket by Bridger Salvevold and a hoop off a rebound by Dawson Bergum put the Cowboys ahead by a 45-38 score with 3:12 left.

The Red Hawks batted back on a drive by Joseph Robertson and an inside shot by Dethman for a 45-42 score. A free throw by Dethman cut the gap to 45-43 with 58 seconds left.

The Red Hawks had chances to either tie the game or take the lead during the final minute but missed three shot attempts and had a turnover.

Culbertson’s top scorers were Gavin Deen with 16 and Salvevold with 13 points.

Also scoring were Bergum with five, Halvorson with five, Mark Kirkaldie with four and Donte Eagle Boy with two points.

Dethman finished with 17 points for the Red Hawks. Landon Kelm had a solid game with 16 points including four three-pointers. Also scoring were Robertson with five, Rylan Young with three and Daniel Forizs with two.

Culbertson led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter and increased the margin to 24-14 at the half.
