Bainville Girls Down Culbertson, 60-46
The Bainville Bulldogs slowly pulled away to beat Culbertson, 60-46, in District 2C girls’ basketball action on Friday, Feb. 13.
The Cowgirls put together a strong effort on senior night and held a 23-21 halftime advantage.
A three-point play by Emma Berwick provided Culbertson with a 33-32 lead with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, but Bainville then struck for six consecutive points on two shots by Hailey Berwick and a layup by Jodi Albus off a long pass from H. Berwick.
After Anna Steppler hit a three-pointer for the Cowgirls, Bainville’s H. Berwick drove in for a hoop to put the Bulldogs up 40-36 to end the third quarter.
Ahead by a 42-38 margin early in the fourth period, Bainville tallied six of the next eight points on a coast-tocoast drive by H. Berwick, a 14-footer by Jaylynn Bjorge and an inside shot by Addison Hansen.
Culbertson’s Kalia Featherston hit a 15-footer with 4:16 left, but Bainville responded with hoops by Albus and H. Berwick.
The Cowgirls cut the margin to 52-44 on a basket by E. Berwick with 2:58 left. Bainville pulled away with the next eight points on four points by Bjorge, a baseline shot by Hansen and a short jumper by H. Berwick.
Bainville’s top scorers were H. Berwick with 19 and Hansen with 16 points.
Also scoring were Albus with nine, Lila Butikofer with eight, Bjorge with six and Chandi Johnson with two.
Leading the Cowgirls were E. Berwick with 14, Steppler with nine and Leandra Perkins with eight. Also scoring were Featherston with seven, Ivy Colvin with five, Payton Labatte with two and Bella Petersen with one.
A three-point play by E. Berwick ended the first quarter to put the Cowgirls ahead 11-8.
Four straight points by H. Berwick put the Bulldogs up 21-19 late in the second quarter, but Culbertson gained a 23-21 lead on baskets by Colvin and E. Berwick.
