Red Hawks Fight Off Cowgirls In League Game
The Froid/Lake girls’ basketball team posted a 53-46 home victory over Culbertson on Friday, Jan. 30.
Culbertson took an 11-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter on a free throw by Anna Steppler and a basket off a rebound by Emma Berwick.
The Red Hawks responded with six straight points early in the second period as Leah Murray hit a three-pointer, Joelle Davidson made a free throw and Isabelle Nordwick fired in a 12-footer.
A pair of three-pointers by Laytyn Davidson increased Froid/Lake’s advantage to 2317. After the Cowgirls fought back to 23-22, Keira Stentoft hit two free throws to end the half at 25-22.
The Red Hawks were able to gain a 33-25 during the third quarter on a free throw by Nordwick and three straight points by J. Davidson. After a basket by Culbertson’s Berwick, L. Davidson hit another three-pointer for a 36-27 margin. Culbertson battled back with a three-pointer by Payton Labatte and two inside shots by Leandra Perkins to pull to 39-34. Froid/ Lake ended the quarter with a three-pointer by Murray for a 42-34 advantage.
The Cowgirls got as close as 47-44 in the third quarter on a drive by Steppler and a basket by Charity Wilbanks, but the Red Hawks pulled away down the stretch for the league victory.
Top scorers for Froid/Lake were Atley Jensen with 14 and J. Davidson with 10 points. L. Davidson and Murray added nine points each.
Rounding out the scoring were Nordwick with seven, Avery Johnson with two and Stentoft with two.
Berwick finished with 16 points for the Cowgirls.
Also scoring were Labatte with nine, Steppler with seven, Perkins with six, Aeryn Ator with four and Wilbanks with two.
