Bulldogs Fight Off Savage

The Bainville Bulldogs survived a strong challenge from Savage to post a loser-out victory at the Eastern C divisional volleyball tournament on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs emerged with a 2521, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, win.

In the first set, Bainville broke away from a 14-14 game with five straight points including a kill by Hailey Berwick and a block by Lila Butikofer.

A tip by Hansen and a kill by Berwick increased the gap to 21-17, but Savage responded with three straight plays on net winners by KD Lyons.

Bainville took control as kills by Hansen and Bjorge put the margin at 24-20 en route to a 25-21 victory.

The net play of Casey Myers and a back-row kill by Berwick led Bainville to a 12-5 start in the second set. Kills by Berwick, Myers and Butikofer along with a block by Hansen increased the gap to 18-11. After the Warriors battled back to 18-16, the Bulldogs grabbed a 21-16 advantage on kills by Berwick and Myers. With the score at 23-19, two kills by Berwick helped end the second set.

During the third set, the Bulldogs held a 19-15 advantage until blocks by Lyons tied the score. Savage moved ahead 23-22, but a kill by Myers produced a 23-23 deadlock.

The Warriors then accounted for the last two points including an ace by Ava Jorgensen to end the set.

The fourth set was a battle, but the Bulldogs gained an 18-15 lead on kills by Berwick and Bjorge. Savage came right back on kills by Lyons for an 18-18 deadlock.

A tip and ace by Berwick put Bainville up 20-18. The Bulldogs stayed ahead at 2320 on a tip by Butikofer and a kill by Chandi Johnson.

The match remained extremely competitive as a tip by Savage’s Miley Pilgeram and another block by Lyons pulled Savage even at 23-23.

Bainville held on with the last two points of the match on a block by Johnson and an ace by Johnna Ryder.
