From playing the trumpet to showing pigs at the fair, Culbertson High School senior Jaxon Flinn has found several ways to get involved during his school years. Now, the 17-year-old is looking ahead to a career that will put his hands to work.

Flinn plans to attend college to study welding or mechanics. He is still exploring schools as he considers his next steps toward a career in the trades.

For now, his senior year includes band, speech and drama and 4-H — activities that have given him opportunities to perform, compete and take responsibility for livestock projects.

Flinn has played the trumpet since fifth grade and has earned letters in both band and speech and drama. In speech and drama, he placed eighth at state in informative speaking with a presentation about combines.

His involvement in 4-H began around age 8. This summer, he showed pigs at the fair, earning blue ribbons and reserve honors in his pig’s breeding class.

In the classroom, Flinn’s favorite subject is forensic science, taught by Elizabeth Standley. He named the teacher and coach he calls “Mrs. G” as his favorite teacher. When it comes to a favorite drink, his choice is simple: sweet tea, regardless of the brand.

Flinn joined the Culbertson school community in November 2020, during his sixth-grade year. His family moved from Wyoming because of his father’s work. He is the son of Chelsea and Steven Flinn and has two younger brothers.

As graduation approaches, Flinn’s advice to younger students reflects how quickly his own school years have passed.

“Enjoy school while it lasts because it goes by quick,” he said.

He also encourages underclassmen to stay on top of their homework and complete assignments as they receive them — practical advice from a senior preparing to take his own next step.
