Cowgirls Defeat MonDak At Tournament

The Culbertson Cowgirls overcame a slow start to beat MonDak in four sets during the first round of the District 2C volleyball tournament in Culbertson on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Culbertson came away with a 24-26, 25-18, 25-18, 2516, victory.

After dropping the first set, the Cowgirls gained a 23-15 lead in the second set by scoring six straight points. Highlighting action were kills by Emma Berwick, Ayden Ator and Mariana Burciaga.

Culbertson went on to post a 25-18 victory in the second set.

The third set was deadlocked at 13-13, but a spike by Leandra Perkins helped the Cowgirls take the lead.

After a kill by MonDak’s Sydney Rudningen pulled the Thunder to 17-16, the Cowgirls responded with the next four points on a spike by Berwick, a kill by Payton Labatte, a spike by Burciaga and an ace by Perkins.

A pair of kills by Berwick led Culbertson down the stretch for the third-set victory.

In the fourth set, the serving of Berwick helped the Cowgirls grab a 17-8 advantage. Burciaga served an ace for a 19-10 margin.

After the Thunder cut the gap to 19-14, an ace by Ator was good for a 21-14 lead.

A kill by Labatte, an ace by Catherine Donaldson and a kill by Berwick led the way to the 25-16 win.
