Cowgirls Earn Victory Over Lustre Squad


Culbertson fought off Lustre in a non-conference volleyball match that went four sets in Lustre on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The Cowgirls came away with a 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 25-19 victory.
The serving of Stella Fox and net play of Catherine Donaldson led Culbertson to an 18-8 advantage in the first set. The Lions were able to battle back to 19-13 on aces by Hannah Brown and a kill by Aleah Fast.
Culbertson struck back with two kills by Charity Wilbanks and an ace by Donaldson for a 24-13 lead en route to the 25-15 lead.
The strong net play of Lustre’s Fast and serving of Holly Hilkemann highlighted play as the Lions gained a 1510 lead in the second set. A spike by Lauryn Holzrichter put Lustre ahead by a 19-11 margin.
Ahead by a 21-12 margin, the Lions used two spikes by Hannah Brown and a kill by Holzrichter for a 24-13 advantage.
Culbertson came as close as 24-18 before Lustre ended the set.
With the score at 15-11 in the third set, Culbertson jumped out to a 17-12 lead with Donaldson’s net play leading the way. A block by Fast cut the gap to 18-14, but the Cowgirls answered with a spike by Mariana Burciaga.
A tip by Ayden Ator, a serve by Stella Fox and a kill by Burciaga put Culbertson ahead by a 23-15 lead. An ace by Fox ended the third set at 25-15.
The Cowgirls earned a 19--12 lead in the fourth set on a kill and ace by Burciaga, a kill by Donaldson and an incredible hit by Ator.
An ace by Hilkemann and two kills by Fast pulled the Lions back to 19-15.
A kill by Holzrichter kept the Lions close at 22-18, but the Cowgirls were able to end the match on an ace by Burciaga and a tip by Ator.
The Cowgirls will play at Richey/Lambert on Saturday, Oct. 11.
