Big Third Quarter Lifts Cowboys Over Plentywood

The Culbertson Cowboys broke away in the second half for a 61-34 conference football victory on Friday, Sept. 26.

Ahead by only a 14-6 halftime margin, the Cowboys scored on their first possession of the second half when quarterback Brooks Solem races 23 yards for a touchdown.

After Culbertson recovered an on-sides kick, Solem scored on a 36-yard dash with 10:14 left to put the lead at 27-6 with 10:14 left in the period.

The Cowboys were soon in scoring position again thanks to an interception by Aden Drake. Solem sprinted 33 yards for a touchdown and a 34-6 advantage.

After Plentywood reached the end zone on a five-yard pass play, the Cowboys struck again when Solem connected with Drake on a 32-yard touchdown throw for a 40-14 margin.

The Wildcats responded with an 18-yard pass play for a touchdown, but Solem returned the ensuing kickoff 68 yards for a 47-20 advantage.

On the last play of the third quarter, the Wildcats reached the end zone on a 14-yard quarterback keeper run to close the margin to 47-28.

Culbertson added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 61-34 final.

Solem scored on a 65-yard run with 11:49 remaining to increase the gap to 55-28.

After Plentywood scored on a 37-yard pass play, Solem battled in for a three-yard score to put the margin at 6134 with 7:22 remaining.

Solem finished with 382 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 25 carries. The junior accounted for 514 total yards.

The Cowboys will host Ekalaka on Friday, Oct. 3.
