Cowgirls Open With Tourney


The Culbertson Cowgirls had a solid start to their volleyball season as they tied for third place at their home invitational on Saturday, Aug. 30.
The Cowgirls took second in their pool during morning play that included a victory over Lustre Christian.
Culbertson then fought off Brockton, 25-22, 25-18, at the start of tournament action.
Behind by a 16-11 margin in the first set, the Cowgirls fought back to 16-15 on the net play of Leandra Perkins and Emma Berwick.
Culbertson pulled even at 19-19 on a kill by Catherine Donaldson.
With the score at 22-22, Culbertson tallied the final three points on two serves by Donaldson and a kill by Berwick.
The Cowgirls used the accurate serving of Ayden Ator to gain a 14-9 advantage in the second set.
Brockton stayed close at 22-17 until Culbertson struck for the final four points including kills by Perkins and Donaldson.
The Cowgirls then fell to Savage by a 19-25, 15-25, final.
Culbertson took an early lead in the first set as net plays by Berwick, Kalia Featherston and Donaldson led the way.
A block by Berwick pulled Culbertson to 20-19 until Savage scored the last five points.
Culbertson fell behind 15-8 in the second set.
After the Cowgirls battled back to 18-15, the Warriors accounted for the last seven points.
Fairview defeated Savage in the tournament’s championship match.
