Cowboys Stop Fairview To Begin Season

The Culbertson Cowboys opened their football season with an impressive 28-14 victory over two-time defending state champion Fairview on Saturday, Aug. 30.

The visiting Cowboys made a mistake early when a snap over the quarterback’s head gave Fairview possession deep inside Culbertson territory. The Warriors went on to score for an 8-0 advantage.

On Culbertson’s second drive, the Cowboys marched the distance for a touchdown. A three-yard pass from Brooks Solem to Mauricio Mena cut the margin to 8-6 with 7:06 left in the second quarter. Solem passed to Ian Snyder for the two-point conversion.

The Cowboys grabbed the lead on a 15-yard throw from Solem to Aden Drake with 1:50 left in the half.

Culbertson increased the margin to 21-8 on a 24-yard run by Solem during the third quarter. Mena kicked the conversion for the Cowboys.

After Fairview pulled to 21-14 on a 50-yard run late in the third quarter. The Cowboys reached the end zone on a short run by Solem. Mena’s kick put the margin at 28-14.

The Cowboys forced five turnovers in the contest. Drake and Solem each had two interceptions. Kaden Featherston forced a fumble that was recovered by Micah Eagle Boy.

“Defensively, we controlled the game. We were on it,” Culbertson Coach Brian Manning said. “We had a very good defensive game.”

Offensively, Solem led the attack with more than 200 offensive yards. The Cowboys need to be more efficient on the offensive end, Manning said.

“I’m very, very proud of how they played,” Manning said of the Cowboys.

Culbertson will host Forsyth on Friday, Sept. 5.
