Coming off a successful Roosevelt County Fair in livestock judging a year ago, Bainville’s Jaylynn Bjorge is looking forward to more exciting days at this week’s county fair in Culbertson.

Last season, Bjorge was the grand champion in sheep showmanship, grand champion for feeder lambs, reserve champion for swine, grand champion for market swine and co-reserve champion for round-robin showmanship.

Bjorge, who has been involved in 4-H for five years and FFA for two years, said the sheep showmanship honor was the one that she appreciated the most.

“There was tough competition,” Bjorge said.

The incoming sophomore at Bainville High School says she really enjoys working with her pigs.

“Pigs are more fun. They have bigger personalities than sheep do,” she explained.

Other awards for Bjorge through the years have included in market swine and showmanship swine.

At this year’s fair, she will compete in steers, pigs and sheep. “I think I will do pretty well,” she said hopefully.

Her pig entries will be in breeding gilt and market swine.

“I like my gilt better,” Bjorge said of her pigs. “She’s more funny. She likes to play in the mud.”

Her steer, Stewie, comes from the Picard Ranch. “He is playful. He has a big attitude,” Bjorge noted.

She also has two sheep ready for the fair. She has been breeding her own sheep for the last two years, and that has been a learning process for her.

One of the pleasures of the fair is sharing the success of friends throughout Roosevelt County.

“I like seeing everybody’s hard work getting paid off,” Bjorge said.

She jokes that if she does have a rival come fair time, the friendly rival is Holden Salivar.

“I’ve been showing with him for quite a while now,” Bjorge explained.

Bjorge feels being involved in both the 4-H and FFA programs has been very beneficial for her.

“It’s important because you can learn a lot about agriculture and that can take you far in life,” Bjorge said.

She enjoys veterinary science information and plans to become a veterinarian.

She thanks the Salivars for helping her learn about pigs and the Featherstons for assisting her with sheep.

Bjorge has taken time this year to help the Anderson family in their first year of showing sheep.
