Former Froid/Lake athletic standout Mason Dethman is looking forward to a bigger role for Montana State University’s football team as a redshirt freshman this season.

Montana State, which advanced to the FCS national championship game last season, started practices last week.

Dethman is hoping to work his way onto all the special teams for the Bobcats. “And maybe get into the rotation at linebacker, if someone gets injured,” the Will linebacker said.

The Bobcats will open their season against Big 10 powerhouse Oregon in Eugene, Ore., on Aug. 30.

“That will be a good game,” Dethman said of playing the Ducks. “It’s going to be a huge game.”

The Bobcats will then host South Dakota State, a consistent FCS playoff team, on Sept. 6.

Since graduating from high school, Dethman has increased his weight from 190 pounds to 210-215 pounds. “I put on a lot of muscle,” he said. “I’m feeling that I’m in the best shape of my life.”

Last year’s MSU team finished with a 15-1 record. Dethman had the opportunity to travel with the team for the national championship game held in Frisco, Texas. Although the team lost some “Bobcat greats,” Dethman is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“Our standard is still our standard. People will step up,” he said.

Other eastern Montana players on the team include sophomore defensive tackle Hunter Sharbono from Fairview and true freshman defensive end Blaine Downing from Malta/Saco. Another player from a “small school” is sophomore linebacker Bryce Grebe from Melstone.

Asked if he had any words to share with area fans, Dethman simply said, “Go Cats.”
