The Froid/Lake Red Hawks played probably their best game of the boys’ basketball season but fell to Scobey, 6458, in the third-place game at the Eastern C divisional tournament in Glasgow on Friday, March 1.

The explosive Spartans enjoyed a 34-21 advantage with under two minutes to play in the first half, but Froid/ Lake’s Mason Dethman accounted for the final eight points of the half, including a three-pointer with two seconds left, to close the margin to 34-29.

The scoring of Dethman and a three-point play by Nate Stentoft pulled the Red Hawks as close as 43-41 midway into the third quarter. Scobey struck back on baskets by Braxton Wolfe and Bram Handran, but a free throw by Dethman kept the Red Hawks close at 47-42 to end the third quarter.

A three-pointer by Cooper Axtman put Scobey up 52-43 with 4:11 left. The Red Hawks kept battling as a drive by Dethman and a three-pointer by Landon Kelm cut the margin to 52-48 with still 3:12 to play.

Froid/Lake then struggled with turnovers, and Scobey increased its lead to 60-48. Kelm connected on a 16-footer with a minute to play for a 60-50 margin. Kelm then fired in a three-pointer for a 62-55 score with 37 seconds left.

The Spartans answered with a pair of free throws by Handran and Axtman. Froid/ Lake’s Cody Olson ended the game with a three-pointer.

Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Dethman with 24, Kelm with 18 and Stentoft with 13 points. Olson added three points.

Leading Scobey were Handran with 16, Axtman with 13, Brekken Maher with 11 and Wolfe with 10 points.
