Froid/Lake gained a lead in the third quarter and held on for a 54-49 victory over Bainville in a District 2C boys’ basketball battle on Friday, Feb. 16.

The Red Hawks were ahead by a 25-22 half-time score in the game to determine a divisional berth. Two jumpers by Mason Dethman and a drive by Nate Stentoft put Froid/Lake up 31-22 to open the third quarter.

The Red Hawks were able to increase the gap to 41-29 late in the period on a pair of free throws by Cody Olson and a basket by Stentoft after a steal by Dethman. Bainville’s Samuel Butikofer responded with the next five points to cut the margin to seven points.

A three-pointer by Froid/ Lake’s Landon Kelm provided a 44-34 margin at the end of the quarter.

The Bulldogs battled back on five straight points by S. Butikofer to begin the fourth period. The Red Hawks, however, kept the upper-hand on a three-pointer by Stentoft and a layup by Kelm.

S. Butikofer hit a pull-up jumper and Alex Strickland followed with a free throw to close the margin to 49-43 with 4:12 remaining.

Another basket by S. Butikofer got the Bulldogs as close as four points, but Daniel Forizs then scored off a pass from Stentoft. After Bainville’s Cayden Boyd scored on a drive, the Red Hawks were able to increase their lead to 53-47 on free tosses by Dethman and Stentoft.

A drive by Strickland pulled the Bulldogs to 53-49 with 21 seconds left, but Bainville couldn’t get any closer.

Froid/Lake’s top scorers were Stentoft with 18 and Dethman with 15 points. Also scoring were Kelm with eight, Forizs with seven, Olson with four and Joseph Robertson with two points.

Dethman and Stentoft each grabbed nine rebounds.

S. Butikofer finished with 23 points and Boyd added 10 points. Rounding out the scoring were Strickland with nine and Charles Butikofer with seven points.

C. Butikofer had seven rebounds and four steals.
