Poplar High School senior Jazmin Gorder had no idea that she was going to be the focus when a school assembly was announced on Thursday, April 21.

That afternoon, however, Gov. Greg Gianforte came to the school with the news that Gorder is a recipient of the governor’s Spirit of Montana award.

The honor is a recognition of Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication or service to their communities.

Gianforte noted that Gorder has excelled both on the wrestling mat and the classroom. She is a two-time state wrestling champion and recently earned All-America honors during a meet in Iowa.

“She sets an outstanding example for young Montanans,” Gianforte said. “It takes a special person to be a champion, and you are that.”

The governor said coaches shared that Gorder’s will to win and desire to improve sets her apart.

Gianforte added that Gorder’s example has resulted in an uptick for girls’ wrestling in Poplar and the entire Fort Peck Reservation.

“Young girls are looking up to you,” he said.

Gorder, who will wrestle at Minot State University, is also an All-State athlete in cross country and track.

“All of Montana is cheering you on,” Gianforte said.

An emotional Gorder thanked her coaches, teammates and family for their support.

“I don’t know what to say. It’s a surprise,” Gorder said at the presentation.
