In a match featuring two hard-hitting squads, Froid/ Lake fought off Culbertson by a 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-11, final in Culbertson on Friday, Oct. 8.

After trailing early in the first set, the Red Hawks grabbed the lead on three kills by Carolyne Christoffersen. A tip by Baylee Davidson and an ace by Mara Salvevold produced a 13-11 margin.

The Cowgirls stayed close as a block and serve by Makena Hauge closed the margin to 19-18. After Christoffersen, a powerful junior, led Froid/ Lake to a 23-18 lead, Salvevold scored a kill for a 23-18 advantage.

With the score at 23-19, a kill and ace by Salvevold ended the first set.

The Red Hawks gained a 6-1 lead in the second set, but the net play of Hauge and an ace by Perla Burciage helped Culbertson’s comeback attempt.

The Cowgirls trailed 12-7 but then struck for six straight points for a 13-12 lead. Two kills by Destiny Thompson and an ace by Alicyn Ator highlighted the streak.

Froid/Lake responded with two kills by Dasani Nesbit and a tip by Meg Ator to regain the lead. A tip and block by Hauge kept the Cowgirls close at 20-17, the Red Hawks tallied the game’s final five points including four on net winners by Christoffersen.

Culbertson played very well in the third set to take a 25-21 victory.

Ahead by only a 10-9 margin in the third set, the Cowgirls accounted for the next eight points to earn an 18-9 lead. Thompson scored two kills during the time.

After kills by Nesbit pulled Froid/Lake to 22-16, a kill by Culbertson’s Kenadee Kempton put the score at 23-16. Christoffersen got the Red Hawks as close as 24-21 before Hauge finished the set with a kill.

Kills by Nesbit, Christoffersen and Salvevold led Froid/Lake to a 13-3 advantage in the fourth set. An ace by Meg Ator and a tip by B. Davidson increased the gap to 16-3.

After a kill by Hauge put the margin at 23-7, the Cowgirls fought back to 23-11 on kills by Thompson and Hauge. The Red Hawks won the match’s final two points on a block and ace by Nesbit.

Leaders for Froid/Lake included Nesbit with 16 kills, Christoffersen with five blocks and Salvevold with four aces.

Meg Ator finished with 20 assists. B. Davidson had five digs.

Culbertson’s Hauge finished with 17 kills, eight blocks and 10 digs. Thompson had one ace, four kills, three blocks and seven digs. Burciaga had two aces, a block and 12 digs.

Koree Marchwick accounted for 19 assists, one ace, four kills, one block and five digs. Kempton scored one ace, three kills, four assists, one block and nine digs. Alicyn Ator had two aces and eight digs. Jazzmin Fugere added two digs.
