After a little bit of a slow start, the defending state champion Froid/Lake Red Hawks rolled to a 49-13 home victory over Roy/Winifred on Saturday, Aug. 28.

“We made mistakes, but we had really good effort,” Coach Michael Reiter said. “As long as we go 100 percent, we can fix mistakes.”

He was pleased with how well the Red Hawks played defensively as an unit.

“As a whole, everybody played well,” Reiter said. “We have little things to fix.”

After the Red Hawks were stopped on their opening possession, Roy/Winifred used a 30-yard pass completion to drive inside Froid/ Lake territory. The Outlaws drove as far as the 20, but the threat ended on a combined sack by Caden Kelm and Quinn Abar.

“We weren’t doing what we’re supposed to do,” Reiter said of the opening defensive series.

The Red Hawks reached the end zone for the first time when quarterback Mason Dethman raced 32 yards on a keeper run with 2:40 left in the opening quarter.

On their next possession, Ashdyn Hobbs broke loose for a 49-yard gain, thanks to a great block by fullback Brett Stentoft, down to the Roy/ Winifred 12. Two plays later, Dethman connected with Abar on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Dethman passed to Abar for the conversion and a 13-0 advantage with 9:55 left in the half.

Abar, a 210-pound junior, set the Red Hawks up for another score when he recovered a fumble at the Roy-Winifred seven. D man scored on first down a 19-0 advantage.

Froid/Lake got back scoring position when Deth man connected with Con Huft on a 26-yard play to 16. The Red Hawks wen to score on a seven-yard by Dethman with 6:09 le the half. Dethman kicked conversion for a 27-0 mar The Red Hawks’ defe then got into the scoring when Ashdyn Hobbs inter cepted a pass and retur the ball 17 yards for a touch down for a 33-0 advantage.

Roy/Winifred scored o two-yard run by Brody G with 16 seconds left in half to put the margin at 3 After dealing with pen alties and turnovers e in the second half, the Hawks struck again w Dethman went 53-yards o fourth-and-37 play with remaining in the third quar ter. Dethman’s kick put margin at 41-6.

A remarkable spinn catch by Huft on a 33-y throw by Dethman resu in a touchdown with 9:51 Dethman’s kick increased advantage to 49-6.

Bodie Donsbach of R Winifred scored on a t yard run with 1:49 left to the game’s scoring.

The Red Hawks will pla Harlowton/Rygate on Sa day, Sept. 4.
