Bainville’s volleyball team improved throughout the day at the season-opening Culbertson Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 27.

The Bulldogs lost to Froid/ Lake in the first match of pool play, They dropped the first set by only a 15-14 margin.

Bainville then fell to Scobey’s JVs, 12-15, 5-15, and to Nashua, 12-15, 5-15.

“We had a little mental lapse and struggled for the next few matches,” Bainville Coach Kallie Clarke said of the losses against Scobey’s JVs and Nashua.

Bainville faced Culbertson in the first round of tournament play. Culbertson edged the Bulldogs, 28-30, 25-23, 13-15, in a very well-played match.

“I was really proud of them for not letting past performance dictate how they played against Culbertson. They fought until the end,” Clarke said.

Kills by Kaelyn Romo and Lakyn Rabbe gave the Bulldogs leads of 25-24 and 28-28 in the first set, After Culbertson moved ahead, a block by Elsie Wilson tied the score at 29-29. After a spike by Rabbe, Culbertson tallied the last three points.

The net play of Rabbe led the Bulldogs to a 16-13 advantage and the Bulldogs fought off Culbertson for the second- set win.

“We just need to learn to finish matches, play to win instead of hoping to win,” Clarke said. “We are such a young team that at one point we had three freshmen in the back row receiving, so we will get there by the end of the season.”

The Bulldogs will travel to Fairview on Thursday, Sept. 2, and host Nashua on Friday, Sept. 3.
