Culbertson’s Harrison Green, 17, senior at CHS, attended Boys State June 14-19 in Helena at Carroll College. Culbertson’s Stella Fox attended the Girls State event. The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary conduct the activities.

Green participated as an elected mayor for his city and as a defense attorney at the mock Supreme Court, where he worked with a team to defend a case involving deliberate homicide. He was chosen to go to Boys National in Washington, D.C., July 17-25. Two boys and two girls from Montana were selected. Green aspires to be an attorney and plans to attend the University of North Dakota to study law.

Fox told the Community News that she had a great time. “I thought Girls State was a really cool experience,” Fox said. “We got to listen to a bunch of speakers, one of which was the Lt. Gov. We also got to debate bills we made in the House and Senate rooms at the Capitol grounds. Earlier in the week, I helped other girls hang up posters they made for their campaigns and helped them run for the positions they wanted.”

The trip across the state is no small thing, of course. Fox said it took a network of local connections. Fox explained “My mom drove us to Terry and we stayed with Cindy Tusler. The next morning, she drove me and five others to Forsyth, where we got on a Legion bus and rode to Helena, picking up two others along the way. When we left, Joe Yoeman from Glasgow drove me, Harrison and two others back to Glasgow where Harrison’s dad picked us up. We dropped the other two off in Dodson and Saco along the way.”

Fox said she would recommend the experience: “We got to do a lot of cool things and listen to a lot of interesting speakers. There are a lot of opportunities involved, such as the mock trial. There were also different committees you could be on, such as the decorating committee for the banquet, the talent show committee, or the news cast banquet. I was on the decorating committee and had a lot of fun decorating with everyone. Even as an introvert, I loved meeting all the people there as well. Everybody was super nice and you could always find somebody willing to help you.”
