Cowboys Defeat Bainville, 52-44, For League Win

The Culbertson Cowboys stepped up during the stretch to edge Bainville, 5244, in District 2C basketball play on Friday, Jan. 16.

Culbertson held a 34-26 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs came as close as three points in the fourth period.

After a basket by Bainville’s Rowan Wilson off a pass from Parker Berwick pulled the Bulldogs to 42-39 with 3:41 left, the Cowboys responded with six of the next seven points on three-pointers by Cal Steppler and Brooks Solem.

A drive by Wilson kept the heat on, but Culbertson came back on a hoop by Cord Snyder off a rebound and a drive by Solem to take a 52-42 advantage with just 38 seconds remaining.

Culbertson’s top scorers were Solem with 17 and Ian Snyder with 15 points.

Also scoring were Plenny Williams with eight, Steppler with eight and C. Snyder with four.

Leading Bainville were Berwick with 14 and Wilson with nine. Kaiden Holmes and Holden Salivar added eight points each. Charles Johnston scored three and Evan Anderson had two.

The Cowboys led 23-18 at the half. Baskets by C. Snyder and I. Snyder put the margin at 34-26 to end the third quarter.

The Bulldogs put together six straight points in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Salivar, a basket by Berwick and a hoop by Holmes off a pass from Wilson to cut the gap to 36-32.

After Williams drove for a basket, Salivar connected on a three-pointer for a 3835 game. Another basket by Williams put the Cowboys ahead 42-37 with 4:31 remaining.

The Cowboys will host Savage on Friday, Jan. 23, and travel to face Richey/Lambert on Saturday, Jan. 24.
