A big second quarter lifted Poplar’s girls’ basketball team to a 51-39 win in Glasgow on Saturday, Jan. 14. The victory improved Poplar’s league record to 3-1 for the season. Poplar’s girls’ wrestling team earned second place at the Choteau Invitational during the weekend. The Indians finished with 83 points right behind Simms with 85.5 points. Florence- Carlton took third with 78 points. Angelina Escarcega captured the championship at 107 pounds. The Wolves struggled in the second half and fell in Scobey, 48-36, during non-conference girls’ basketball action on Saturday, Jan. 14. Lustre Christian’s boys’ basketball team cruised to a 78-34 league victory over North County on Friday, Jan. 13. The Lions jumped out to a 19-8 advantage in the first quarter and held a 42-20 halftime lead. Lustre scored 20 points in the third quarter to increase the margin to 62-25. The Frazer Bearcubs outscored Dodson, 75-59, in girls’ basketball action on Friday, Jan. 13. After leading by only a 1513 margin at the end of the first quarter, the Bearcubs struck for 22 points in the second period for a 37-28 lead. Frazer increased its advantage to 58-43 in the third quarter. Leading Frazer’s attack were Shakira Beston with 24 and Baily Beston with 19 points.

Frazer dropped both basketball contests at home against North Country on Saturday, Jan. 14. Frazer’s boys lost by a 74-37 final. The Bearcubs were competitive in the first half. North Country led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 36-25 at the half. The Mavericks outscored Frazer by a 24-5 margin in the third quarter. The Poplar Indians dropped two tough conference basketball contests in Malta on Friday, Jan. 13. In the boys’ game, the Indians were edged by a 63-59 final. The 15th annual Poplar River ice fishing contest is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The contest runs from noon to 3 p.m. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place. Additional door prizes will also be awarded.
