Bainville’s girls’ basketball team made a nice comeback bid in the final quarter but fell to North Country, 35-25, at the Eastern C divisional tournament on Thursday, March 5.

The Bulldogs were behind by a 32-12 margin after three quarters of play, but Bainville’s offense got going in the final period.

The Bulldogs started their comeback attempt with the first seven points of the fourth period on a three-pointer by Hailey Berwick, a fast-break drive by Jodi Albus and a 15-footer by Berwick.

After Albus fired in a three-pointer at the 3:50 mark, Berwick connected on a three-pointer from way out to close the margin to 32-25 with 3:27 remaining.

Bainville, however, couldn’t score again in the contest as the Mavericks took a 35-25 win.

Berwick scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs. Albus added five points. Lila Butikofer had four points.

BaiLee McColly accounted for 13 of North Country’s points. Adding six points each were Emerson Downing, Kennedy Simonson and Gracie Wasson.

After a 12-footer by Bainville’s Butikofer opened the game, the Mavericks struck for the last eight points of the first quarter for an 8-2 lead.

The Mavericks increased their lead to 13-2 until the Bulldogs scored on a shot by Butikofer and three-pointer by Berwick.

North Country led 16-7 at the half and increased the margin to 24-7 midway into the third quarter on a threepoint play by McColly. A three-pointer at the buzzer put the Mavericks ahead by 20 points to end the quarter.

Bainville’s girls’ basketball squad fell behind in the third quarter and lost to Ekalaka, 52-40, in loser-out play at the Eastern C divisional tournament held in Miles City on Friday, March 6.

Bainville grabbed a 19-17 half-time lead when Jodi Albus hit a 14-footer with 18 seconds left in the second quarter.

Lila Butikofer scored off a rebound early in the third quarter for a 21-17 advantage.

Ekalaka then tallied the next six points to move ahead. After a free throw by Hailey Berwick, Ekalaka’s Nasya O’Connor accounted for six of the game’s next seven points.

Berwick made a free throw to end the third quarter at 2924.

A three-pointer by Berwick off the backboard pulled Bainville to 31-28, but O’Connor responded with a three-pointer.

A pair of free throws by Addison Hansen and a 12-footer by Butikofer closed the margin to 34-32.

Ekalaka then ran off 11 straight points including three-pointers by O’Connor and Carlan Laughery for a 4532 advantage.

Bainville didn’t back down and scored on a free throw by Butikofer and a fast-break basket by Hansen.

Berwick then fired in a 15-footer and three-pointer for a 46-40 game, but Bainville couldn’t get any closer.

Berwick finished the game with 21 points to lead Bainville. Also scoring were Hansen with six, Butikofer with six, Albus with five and Jaylynn Bjorge with two points.
