Tobacco Prevention News
As we observe national Through with Chew Week (Feb. 15–21), Roosevelt County Health Department is highlighting a positive trend in our state: the vast majority of Montanans are choosing to live tobacco- and nicotine- free. While the tobacco industry often makes these products seem like a common part of Montana life, the data tells a different story. Currently, only 6 percent of Montana adults use smokeless tobacco – meaning 94 percent do not. Similarly, despite the aggressive marketing of newer products, only 7 percent of Montana adults use nicotine pouches, while 93 percent choose not to.
Choosing to be part of that tobacco-free majority is one of the best decisions you can make for your health. Smokeless tobacco is not a “safe” alternative to smoking; it is linked to gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancers. Even “tobacco-free” nicotine pouches carry risks, delivering high doses of an addictive chemical that can negatively affect heart and brain health.
If you chew or use pouches, let this week be your turning point. You don’t have to do it alone. Quit Now Montana offers Montana residents free coaching and nicotine replacement therapy (like gum or patches) to help you quit for good. The program works. Last year, nearly half of the smokeless tobacco users who used Quit Now Montana were able to successfully become tobacco-free.
