Cowgirls Edge Broadus Team, 40-38

The Culbertson Cowgirls opened their basketball season on a strong note with a 40-38 victory over Broadus during action in Miles City on Friday, Dec. 5.

Culbertson trailed by a 3128 margin early in the fourth quarter, but an inside basket by Ayden Ator and a turnaround shot by Emma Berwick put the Cowgirls up 32-31.

After Broadus went ahead 34-32 on a three-point shot, the Cowgirls responded with a free throw by Berwick and a basket off a rebound by Stella Fox. The Hawks, however, regained the lead at 3635 with 2:20 remaining.

The Cowgirls went ahead to stay on a steal and layup by Anna Steppler with 1:55 left. A short shot by Berwick put the margin at 39-36.

After Broadus cut the gap to 39-38, Steppler hit a free throw with 27 seconds left.

Broadus’ last possession ended on a steal by Ator.

Culbertson fell behind 14-4 in the first quarter and 22-15 at the half.

The Cowgirls fought back to 24-22 on baskets by Berwick, Steppler and Fox in the third quarter.

Steppler and Berwick led Culbertson with 10 points.

Also scoring were Charity Wilbanks with six, Fox with six, Ator with four, Bella Petersen with two and Kalia Featherston with two.

The Cowgirls lost to Harlowton/ Ryegate/Judith Gap, 48-29, on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Culbertson trailed by a 2611 margin at the half.

Top scorers for the Cowgirls were Steppler with eight and Berwick with seven points.

Rounding out the scoring were Fox with four, Ivy Colvin with three, Payton Labatte with three, Leandra Perkins with two and Ator with two.
