Commissioners Cancel Certain Local Elections
Due to candidates running unopposed, the Roosevelt County commissioners canceled certain uncontested local government elections during their weekly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Declared elected by acclamation were Gordon Oelkers for commissioner, Tracy Miranda for clerk and recorder, Thomas Bleicher for county attorney, Marvin Youpee for justice of the peace in Post No. 1, Tara Nickoloff for justice of the peace in Post No. 2, Jason Baker for sheriff and Betty Romo for treasurer.
The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Also during the meeting, commissioners discussed 12 properties that listed on tax deed delinquent. Wolf Point Mayor Chris Dschaak said city council members determined which properties to improve through a memorandum of understanding with the county. The city’s wishes were 414 Third Ave. S., and 427 Front Street.
Dschaak said the city is willing to clean up the house on 229 Fairweather.
Commissioner Gordon Oelkers said that the meeting’s action would be only to accept all of the 12 properties. If the properties aren’t sold, the county can then enter into the MOU.
Dschaak said the goal is to potentially clean up to three residences, including two with the county’s assistance.
Commissioners approved providing $8,595 for the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office to purchase another K9 dog. The sheriff’s office is applying for three more grants for the dog. Total cost to have the dog for the K9 program is about $32,000.
Commissioners approved the appointment of Cora Norton to the Bainville Museum Board for a three-year term.
A bid was approved for parking lot striping at the senior center and behind the courthouse.
Both Oelkers and Commissioner Robert Toavs recently attended a meeting for the Great Northern Development Corporation. The group is pushing for an increase in tourism.
