Culbertson Teacher Selected For “We The Teachers” Fellowship
Culbertson School is proud to celebrate junior high history teacher April Wills, who has been selected for the “We the Teachers: Preparing the Next Generation Through History and Civics” national fellowship program at William & Mary.
Wills is among 100 educators selected nationwide for the fellowship, which is designed to strengthen history and civics instruction through meaningful professional learning and collaboration. The program brings teachers together to explore historical inquiry, evidence-based teaching practices, civil dialogue and classroom-ready resources that can help students connect the past to the world around them.
As part of the fellowship, she will attend the Congress of Educators, a four-day residential institute in July held across Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. There, participants will engage with primary sources and placebased learning centered on America’s founding, while gaining new tools and ideas to bring back to their schools and students.
“I am honored to participate in this fellowship with William & Mary as our nation marks its 250th anniversary. I look forward to deepening my understanding of the founding principles that have shaped our country and continue to influence its future,” Wills said. “I am also excited to grow as an educator and bring the knowledge, resources and experiences from this opportunity back to my students.”
The teacher added, “Connecting with educators from across the country is an essential part of my professional growth. Building a community that shares ideas, resources, and best practices not only strengthens my own teaching but also creates opportunities to support and learn from fellow educators. I believe this fellowship will further enhance my ability to move students beyond rote memorization, helping them develop confidence in their understanding of history and empowering them to become informed, civically engaged citizens prepared to thoughtfully participate in future decision- making.”
