Froid/Lake Girls Beat Savage, 35-33
The Froid/Lake girls’ basketball team pulled off a 3533 victory during a defensive battle in Savage on Thursday, Jan. 15.
The Red Hawks trailed by a five-point margin in the fourth quarter, but a three-pointer by Laytyn Davidson closed the gap to 2927 with five minutes remaining.
Froid/Lake gained the lead on a three-point shot by Leah Murray at the 4:37 mark. A three-pointer by Avery Johnson increased the lead to 3329 with 3:51 remaining.
Savage battled backs on baskets by Matilda Verhasselt and Mylee Reuter for a 33-33 deadlock with 1:18 left.
After each squad committed a turnover, Froid/Lake scored the winning shot when Isabelle Nordwick drove in for a hoop with 12.7 seconds left.
The Warriors missed on their final shot attempt.
Joelle Davidson led the Red Hawks with 14 points.
Also scoring were Murray with six, Atley Jensen with five, Johnson with three, Nordwick with three, L. Davidson with two and Kassidy Mitchell with two.
Aspen Peterson scored 18 points for Savage.
Froid/Lake led by a 1713 half-time margin, but a three-pointer by Peterson tied the game. Savage held a 22-21 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
In the boys’ game, Savage won by a 40-17 final.
The Warriors gained a 16-8 lead in the first half. Carsen Kelm scored all eight of Froid/Lake’s points in the half.
Savage struck for 17 points in the third quarter for a 33-11 advantage.
Kelm led the Red Hawks with eight points. Also scoring were Rylan Young with three, Easton Marottek with three, Aaron Orozco with two and Jacob Nordlund with one.
Boden Jorgensen accounted for 15 of Savage’s points.
