Firefighters Discuss Safety To Students

Fire Prevention Week
Representatives from the Wolf Point Volunteer Fire Department and BIA Wildfire delivered a presentation at Northside Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in recognition of Fire Prevention Week.
Janet Anderson, BIA Fort Peck Fire prevention specialist, urged students to be careful with camp fires and while shooting fireworks.
“You guys are a big part of preventing fires,” Anderson said.
She stressed to make sure that campfires are completely out.
Cam Burshia, training officer for the fire department, talked about smoke detectors and made sure the students knew the alarm that the devices create when there’s smoke.
“As soon as you hear that, get a hold of your parents and get out as soon as you can,” Burshia said.
Officials stressed to check smoke detectors once a month and should be on every level of a house. The firefighters also made presentations at Southside, Frontier and Headstart during the week.
Burshia had new firefighter Logan Wolff demonstrate their appearance when they might enter a house with a lot of smoke. The attire includes a mask so firefighters can easily breathe.
“He may look a little scary, but remember we’re here to help,” Burshia said.
On another note, Burshia stressed that fire extinguishers instead of water when there’s grease fire while cooking.
Anderson asks students to remember PASS for Pull pin, Aim It, then Spray and Sweep when using a fire extinguisher.
Burshia urged students to develop an escape plan at home with their parents. Topics should include the different exits available at the house.
