Wolves Open Tourney With Win

Consecutive three-pointers by the Wolves in the fourth quarter helped Wolf Point fight off Shelby, 63-59, in the opening round of the Northern B divisional boys’ basketball tournament in Shelby on Thursday, March 2.

The Wolves held only a 52-48 advantage until Jack Kolstad hit a three-pointer with 3:10 remaining and Kelby Bauer followed with a three-pointer for a 58-48 advantage with 2:49 remaining.

The Coyotes kept the pressure on with a three-pointer by Kyle McDermott and a free throw by Randon Richman for a 58-52 game with 2;12 left.

After a steal by Bauer, a layup by Kolstad put the Wolves ahead by eight points. A pair of free throws by Bauer increased the gap to 62-52 with 1:08 left.

Shelby came as close as 6359 on a three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining.

Wolf Point’s top scorers were Gaige Bushman with 17 and Bauer with 13 points.

Also scoring were Kolstad with nine, Juliun Benson with six, Peyton Summers with six, Kraven Silk with five, Cade Stafne with five and Lennoxx Lilley with two points.

Leading Shelby were Kyle McDermott with 20 and Richman with 12 points.

The Wolves led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 32-29 at the half.

Shelby, however, gained a 36-34 advantage during the third quarter.

The Wolves then received a needed lift off the bench when Stafne connected on a basket and hit a three-pointer. A pull-up jumper by Kolstad and a drive by Silk put Wolf Point ahead by a 41-36 margin. A drive by Bushman and a three-pointer by Bauer increased Wolf Point’s lead to 48-39 to end the third quarter.
