Scobey downed Culbertson by a 43-39 final in an exciting third-place game at the Eastern C divisional girls’ basketball tournament in Wolf Point on Friday, March 3.

The Cowgirls put together a solid effort throughout the contest and held a 26-25 lead after three quarters of play. Free throws by Makena Hauge and Perla Burciaga put the Cowgirls ahead 30-28 with 5:19 remaining.

After Scobey grabbed the lead on a three-pointer by Kennadi Cromwell, Culbertson’s Alicyn Ator answered with a 16-footer at the 3:49 mark. Scobey scored on an inside basket by Kaytie Aanstad, but a free throw by Burciaga produced a 33-33 deadlock with 3:24 remaining.

The Spartans gained the upper-hand on a short jumper by Aanstad, but the Cowgirls stayed on pace when Megan Granbois went coast to coast for a basket with 2:10 left. Scobey then grabbed a 39-35 lead on baskets off rebounds by Cromwell and Aanstad.

Two free throws by Burciaga pulled the Cowgirls to 3937 with 34 seconds left, but free throws by Aanstad and Mya Green down the stretch put the game away.

Culbertson’s top scorers were Hauge with 15 and Granbois with 10 points. Also scoring were Alicyn Ator with six, Destiny Thompson with five and Burciaga with four points.

Granbois had eight rebounds and Hauge finished with four steals.

Leading Scobey were Aanstad with 19, Cromwell with 10 and Camrie Holum with eight points.

Aanstad, a 6-1 sophomore, grabbed 15 rebounds. The Spartans outrebounded Culbertson by a 31-16 margin.

Ahead by a 17-14 half-time margin, the Cowgirls increased their advantage to 24-16 during the third quarter on a 14-footer by Thompson and a three-pointer by Hauge. Scobey responded with the next nine points. A hoop by Granbois put Culbertson ahead 26-25 at the end of the third quarter.
