Froid/Lake Opens Tourney With Victory
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks accounted for an impressive performance as they downed Circle, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20, in the opening round of the Eastern C divisional volleyball tournament in Sidney on Thursday, Nov. 4.
The Red Hawks trailed by an 8-7 margin in the opening set until striking for seven straight points. An ace by Baylee Davidson and two kills by Jaeleigh Davidson highlighted the streak.
Another kill by J. Davidson, an ace by Aleah Johnson and a kill by Carolyne Christoffersen put the margin at 17-10.
Circle battled back to 2112 on kills by Jalyn Curtiss and Kayli Haynie, but kills by Mara Salvevold down the stretch led Froid/Lake to a 25-18 victory.
A tip by Johnson, a kill by Salvevold and a kill by Christoffersen led the Red Hawks to a 12-4 advantage in the second set.
After a kill by Circle’s Haynie, the serving of Christoffersen put the Red Hawks up 15-5. A kill by Christoffersen put Froid/Lake ahead 2014.
The Wildcats fought back to 20-17 on a kill by Haynie, an ace by Leah Beery and a kill by Curtiss, but Froid/ Lake responded with a kill by Salvevold, a block by B. Davidson and a back-row kill by Dasani Nesbit for a 23-17 advantage.
A kill by Nesbit ended the second set at 25-18.
The solid net play of Christoffersen, a 5-10 junior, led the Red Hawks to an 18-14 advantage in the third set.
Three kills by Salvevold put the Froid/Lake ahead by a 2216 margin.
The Wildcats came as close as 24-20 on a kill by Grace Gackle, but a kill by Nesbit ended the match.
Christoffersen finished with 10 kills. J. Davidson had two blocks.
Leading the team with three digs each were Johnson and B. Davidson. Serving aces were Johnson, B. Davidson and Christoffersen.
Meg Ator finished with 16 assists.
Circle’s Haynie accounted for nine kills and 12 digs.
