Matthew Lynn Vannatta, 58, died Nov. 25, 2024, at his home west of Williston, N.D. He was born Jan. 20, 1966, to Marlyn and Karen (Rossland) Vannatta, in Tioga, N.D. He moved with his family to Parshall, N.D., at the age of two. Even at that young age, he was developing a hardcharging personality. His parents owned Parshall Wesco Propane and he often would help his dad deliver propane or work on heating systems. When he was nine, the family moved to Bainville, where they farmed/ranched 1,700+ acres. He loved the outdoors, driving heavy equipment and working the cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens. His CB handle was “Choreboy” and his parents depended on him to keep the animals fed. He graduated from Bainville High School in 1984. He was active in basketball, the school play, FFA and random mischief. He attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D., where he earned an associate degree in electronics. It didn’t take long for him to realize that a desk job wasn’t in his future. In 1987, he began his 37-year career at Franz Construction, where he worked with heavy equipment, building everything from roads to oil sites. He was also an inventor in his own right. When faced with a problem on the job site, he engineered creative solutions, building tools or modifying machines to get the job done. In the summer of 1990, his life took a turn when he attended a celebratory party for an annual trail ride over Labor Day weekend. That night, as the music played and the laughter echoed, a 5’3” long-haired, brown-eyed girl caught his eye and he asked her to dance. After a short courtship, he married Carla Jane Huck on June 1, 1991. He faced challenges in life with the same head-strong way he approached everything. In July 1996, he was in a car accident that broke his back in two places. Those injuries usually end in paralysis, but he would not allow that to be his fate. In March 2011, he and Carla lost their home to a house fire. Since he wasn’t one to sit back and say “woe is me,” he was digging out the rubble within days and preparing the site for a new home to be built and configuring a way to get water to his cows. He spent most of his life being a workaholic, but the travel bug finally caught up to him and he was always planning his next adventure. He considered himself semi-retired and had a goal of taking a trip at least once a month. He also enjoyed preparing the soil for planting and digging the potatoes and carrots in Carla’s garden. He spent most of his free time working in the shop repairing equipment, building what he needed to keep everything in working order or helping friends with their repairs. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Judson Township Supervisor and vice-chair of C.A.R.E.S. Known for his honesty and straightforward nature, he didn’t mince words — but always with a sense of humor. He loved to tease his friends and family, and his jokes were a constant source of amusement. He is survived by his wife, Carla; mother, Karen; brothers, Shane Vannatta, JC Vannatta and Jeremy Vannatta; and half-sisters, Becky Selander and Rachel Vannatta. His funeral mass was held Monday, Dec. 2, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williston, N.D. Father Paul Eberle officiated. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in Williston, N.D.

Gertrude Egeland Sundsted, 100, of Plentywood died Nov. 26, 2024. She was born Sept. 26, 1924, to Olav and Ingeborg Vik, immigrants from western Norway. She grew up on the family farm west of Reserve, the second daughter of five children. She attended her local country school, Rose Valley, through the eighth grade, spent three years of high school in Medicine Lake and her senior year at Oak Grove Academy in Fargo, N.D., graduating in 1943. Her parents had a strong belief in the value of education, and all children went on to pursue higher degrees. She continued her education at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn., preparing to teach at a secondary level. Teachers were in short supply during World War II, so she interrupted her education to teach for a school term at Lew Wallace School, east of Antelope. The next year, she returned to Augsburg College and graduated June 2, 1948. After a year of teaching history and social studies at Oak Grove, she decided that younger children were more to her liking. She returned to Sheridan County where she accepted a teaching position at the Wanso School south of Redstone. That winter of 1949-1950 turned out to be a harrowing experience. She was snowed in and isolated for so long that she ran very low on food and firewood. Her father eventually came by sled and rescued her. Deciding it would be safer to live in town, she taught third and fourth grade at Medicine Lake the next year. In 1951, she began to date Jorgen Egeland, a fellow Norwegian and acquaintance from childhood, and they married in July. The Egelands farmed in east Reserve, raising mostly small grains. They also had milk cows and chickens for their own use and sold eggs and cream products in the community. Five daughters and one son were born to this union. Their oldest child, Karen, presented a special challenge in that she was severely handicapped with cerebral palsy. Although Gertrude worried that her other children’s needs too often came second to those of Karen, she came to realize that Karen taught the family to accept difficult things with grace and to appreciate life’s blessings. She found that writing, especially poetry, helped her work through the trauma and helped her commit her loved ones to God’s care. She liked being at home, enjoying reading and teaching her children to love music and to appreciate their Norwegian heritage. Jorgen, and later Jens, were drafted to help with one or two of her many remodeling brainstorms. When reflecting on her early life, she felt that being a second child had caused her to lack confidence and avoid responsibility. But those who knew her saw something entirely different. Her love for others compelled her to fight tirelessly and with fierce determination for causes she believed in or where she saw injustice, especially where Karen was concerned. The Egelands were members of the Medicine Lake Lutheran Church and she belonged also to Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the Association for Retarded Children and later to Women Involved in Farm Economics. In 1988, she and Jorgen left the farm, which had been his father’s homestead. Jorgen had battled cancer since 1985 and died in January 1989. She bought a house in Plentywood to be near Karen who was living in the nursing home. In 1993, she married Jens Sundsted at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Dagmar. They enjoyed many retirement years together traveling and enjoying Sheridan County. Eventually, they moved to The Pioneer Manor and then to La Casa Personal Care. Jens died in early 2019. She lived at La Casa until December 2022 when she moved to SMH nursing home. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Jorgen Egeland and Jens Sundsted; brothers, Torgeir Vik and Olav Vik; sisters, Gudrun Kampen and Margaret Andersen; and daughter, Karen Egeland. She is survived by her children, June Johnson of Plentywood, Oda Egeland of Carnation, Wash., Betsy Egeland- Zook of Casper, Wyo., Jon Egeland of Billings and Tammy Egeland of Billings; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A private family service will take place at a later time.

Delton Loy Pfeiffer, age 67 of Scobey, Mont., passed away Thursday, Nov. 27, 2024, at the Sidney Health Center. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, at the Redstone Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, at Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood with the family to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Delton was born on Feb. 15, 1957, at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital to his parents Kenneth and Pearl (Schuhrke) Pfeiffer. He was raised on the family farm south of Redstone and attended both the Redstone and Outlook public schools, graduating in 1975. After high school, Delton attended Dawson College, graduating with an associate degree. Delton learned farming from his father and the art of cooking from his mother. He loved spending time in the kitchen learning his mother’s culinary skills. He enjoyed telling the story of a cooking episode when somehow there was a flying food event that resulted in globs of a sticky concoction on the walls and appliances. He wouldn’t reveal what it was, but that it was almost impossible to remove and probably could have been marketed as something that could really stick to your ribs! During and after college, Delton tried his hand at a multitude of work adventures. These included farming, pump truck operator for Halliburton Oil Well Services, working on a drilling rig for NiCor, Arabian horse tending, and being a ticket master for a bus company. When the oil boom came to a close, he decided he needed to pursue a career. An advertisement for attending a gaming technical school led him to Las Vegas. After graduation, he became manager of a gaming and video arcade in the city. Sickness of his father brought Delton back to Montana. He found work with Dick Larson for several years maintaining gaming machines and servicing ATM’s. When Dick sold the business, Delton went to work for Blue Rock Pepsi in Williston and Plentywood repairing and maintaining their fountain machines. He worked with Pepsi until cancer forced him to retire. Delton loved to spend time with his friends, classmates, family, neighbors and his dog, Buddy. He was known for his positive attitude about everything and people loved him for it. If he was in a discussion and couldn’t get agreement, instead of getting angry he would use his hand as a wand and as it passed over his head he would simply say, “Well, there isn’t any point in arguing as I can see this is going right over your head.” He also loved to spend time on weekends traveling the backroads to small towns looking for adventure. He often bragged about the 200,000 plus miles he had on his pickup. Delton managed to stay positive through 21 chemo and seven radiation treatments. He wanted to become what he called the “Chemo King” and be an inspiration of survival to all cancer patients. It wasn’t God’s plan for him to beat cancer, but he loved the Lord and he relished the loving and efficient care he received within the Sidney Health Center. Delton was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Pearl Pfeiffer. He never married and is survived by his sister, LaRaye (Dale) Austinson of Madoc; brothers, Harris (Linda) Pfeiffer of Wolf Point and Kendall (Evelyn) Pfeiffer of Philipsburg; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The Bible passage that best describes Delton is Proverbs 3: 5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
