John Manning

John Manning


John Duane Manning, 87, Homestead died Jan. 30, 2022, at his son's home in Worden. He was born to William Manning Sr. and Gladys (Mork) Manning on Aug. 16, 1934, at the family ranch in Homestead, joining his sister Dorothy two years his senior. John's family was part of the Assiniboine/Sioux Fort Peck Tribe. He was raised on the family ranch west of Homestead and John and Dorothy were educated in Medicine Lake. He joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. His time in the military was his only absence from the Manning family ranch. He married JoAnn Lizotte of Froid on Dec. 8, 1971. To this union, two children were born, John William “JW” and Jolynn Anastasia Manning. He enjoyed bronc riding and loved rodeos attending the NFR rodeos in Oklahoma and later in Las Vegas, Nev. Many trips were made to rodeos where he instilled the love of the sport to his son. He and JoAnn later divorced. He lived out his days at the family ranch near Homestead until failing health when he went to stay with his son in Worden. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Ann, from a previous marriage. He is survived by his son, John William “JW” Manning of Worden; sister, Jolynn Anastasia Voth of Sharon Springs, Kansas; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted in the spring/summer of 2022.

Alta Champ

Alta Leah Champ, 57, of Billings died at home on Feb. 11, 2022. She was born on July 5, 1965, on Poplar. She attended Poplar High School and continued her studies in Lawrence, Kansas, where she attended Haskell Indian Nations University. In 2005, she married Melvin Champ. They resided together in Billings after marrying. She worked as a home health aide. She was very loving and generous. She helped those in need and loved to give back to others. She was well loved by everyone who had the opportunity to know her. One of her accomplishments was being an ordained Pentecostal minister. Teaching Sunday school to children was one of her great joys in life. She was great with children, especially her grandchildren who she cherished. Besides her love of spreading joy to others and teaching, she enjoyed arts and crafts. She had gifted hands and like to make Native beading and sewing crafts. She was very fortunate enough to travel all over the country with her husband. Together, they took several trips a year to see new places. Alta's favorite place to visit was Nashville, Tenn. She was predeceased by her brother, Allard Savior. She is survived by her mother, Verbena Savior Jackson and her husband, Royce, of Poplar; brother, Alfred 'Jr.' Savior of Poplar; daughters, Cherish Gutierrez of Utah and Chance Robles of Billings; six grandchildren; stepchildren, Raymond, Johnalena, Deborah, Joe, John, Issac and Deline; and four step-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a burial of cremains will take place later in the Poplar Cemetery.

Calvin Bogar

Calvin Bogar


Calvin James Bogar, 80, of Bloomfield died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. He was born July 29, 1941, in Glendive in the old Burlington Northern Hospital to Melvin H. Bogar and Susan Zora Davis Bogar of Vida, the eldest of five children. He grew up on the family farm at Vida where he attended elementary school and graduated from Circle High School in 1960. He attended college in Bozeman for one year before going to barber school in Yakima, Wash., where he became a master barber. He was barbering in Sidney, where he met Joanne Sattler. They were married April 24, 1966. After barbering in Sidney, Wolf Point and Shelby, the newlyweds managed the Derrick Motel in Glendive for one summer before he realized his dream of being a farmer and bought the Ming farm in Bloomfield in 1967. During this time, he also served for the Army National Guard from 1965-1971. They had four children: Doug, Beverly, Susan and Kristi. He loved farming and the Bloomfield community and getting to know his neighbors. He had a barber
