Turns Around Celebration Experiences Cool Weather During Weekend


The 19th annual Turns Around Celebration was held Aug. 14-16 at American Legion Park in Poplar. Temps were unseasonably cool for campers and celebration attendees. Grand entries were held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Camping day was Aug. 13. During Saturday’s early grand entry, Love Has No Color volunteers were honored with a star quilt and a reception line in the arena. Vernice Chopper

• Northeast Montana has had notable success in high school cross country, but we sometimes forget that the area showcased the first Class B boys’ champion in Montana history. Wearing the maroon and gold of the Poplar Indians, senior Tom Atkinson raced past 40 other runners to capture the honor in Billings on Oct. 31, 1964. Hall of fame mentor Mike Granbois was Atkinson’s coach. •
