The 19th annual Turns Around Celebration was held Aug. 14-16 at American Legion Park in Poplar. Temps were unseasonably cool for campers and celebration attendees.

Grand entries were held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Camping day was Aug. 13.

During Saturday’s early grand entry, Love Has No Color volunteers were honored with a star quilt and a reception line in the arena.

Vernice Chopper told this newspaper that the organization has partnered with Kenny Smoker and the Tribes’ Health Promotion and Disease Prevention program for more than 20 years to enhance wellbeing and strengthen preventive mental health initiatives. Over the years, this collaboration has provided vital support throughout the reservation. Typical Love Has No Collor donations include food boxes for the elderly and backpacks, school supplies, shoes, coats and Christmas gifts for local children.

Specials over the weekend included a $1,000 Men’s Grass Dance honoring head dancer Ronald Fast Horse, a $1,000 Men’s Traditional hosted by the Sharon Red Thunder family for Helen Lester’s descendants, Tiny Tots specials hosted by the Young, Erickson, Carpentier and Feather families, a Hat and Boots special in honor of Piper St. Germaine and a Men’s Grass Dance special Saturday evening for Izzy Youngman and Cyril Iron Ring.

Royalty for the celebration included head woman Amanda Fast Horse and head man Ronald Fast Horse, princess Georgia Good Bird, princess Attendant Piper St. Germaine, junior princess Ivy White Bull, junior princess attendant Delilah Feather, senior traveling princess Miley Crawford and junior traveling princess Urijah Kay Yellow Hammer.

Ronalee Carpentier was celebration advisor. Secretary was Julia Young and Angeline Red Thunder was treasurer. Patrick Ricker was the celebration announcer.
