Austin Earns Honors Through Involvement

Froid High School senior Samantha Austin has enjoyed participating in a variety of activities ranging from speech and drama to golf in high school.

As a senior, she enjoyed great success in her first year in speech and drama. She and teammate Vala Gregor placed fourth at the state meet for classical theater.

“I became a lot more comfortable speaking in front of people,” Austin said of a benefit of being in speech and drama.

Austin also achieved success in Business Professionals of America. As a freshman, she qualified for nationals in an Excel category. She said BPA taught her leadership and job training skills.

Music has been a positive element of her life. She played clarinet for the band as a freshman and sophomore before joining the choir for her junior and seniors years.

She describes music instructor Tyler Harris as her favorite teacher. She says Harris often provides life advice such as explaining that there are two sides to every situation. “He cares about the students,” Austin said.

She was a member of the cheer squad for three years. “I liked that it was a smaller group so we could work on things individually,” Austin said. “We became more advanced.”

Austin participated in both track and golf during her time in high school.

She has attended school in Froid since the second grade. She appreciates the opportunities that the school offers. She notes that she has completed two college course math classes through the school.

“I like that students can have more individualized learning,” Austin said of Froid. “We all have different learning levels. I can do more advanced courses.”

After high school, Austin plans to attend the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and study law.

“My goal has always been to help people,” she explained. “I’m very interested in forensics and criminal things.”
