Bainville eighth-grader Eleanor Iversen is the winner of this year’s VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest for VFW Post 4018. She was honored at the school on Monday, March 2.

English teacher Sarah Morales said she assigns each of her eighthgrade students to write the patriotic essay each year, it’s then up to the students whether they wish to enter the VFW contest. This year, six students took the opportunity.

Iversen received $200 for winning the post’s contest.

“I think it’s a way for them to demonstrate their writing ability to think and create for a specific topic,” Morales explained.

The essays are to be 300-400 words long.

Patriot’s Pen is open to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in public, private or parochial schools in the U.S., its territories or its possessions; or dependents of U.S. military or civilian personnel in overseas schools. Home-schooled students also are eligible.
