General Election Canceled In Culbertson

The Culbertson Town Council met at the town hall in regular session on Monday Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. Mayor Todd Gabriel was present, as were council members Dave Solem, Mark Nelson, Carl Donaldson and Abe Rumsey. Clerk Terri Merrill and Public Works Director Bob Jasper were also present, as were guests DeAnne Weeks and Amber Fox.

A resolution was passed to cancel the upcoming general election. Mayor Todd Gabriel and council members Mark Nelson (Ward 2) and David Solem (Ward 1) are all running unopposed.

An update was provided on the municipal bathhouse project. The town has not received any new invoices for the month of September with Dave Gieb on vacation. Weeks with the Culbertson Women’s Club said the group would like to apply for the Nyquist grant for one or two picnic tables for the pool. Council membership was in favor of the idea and encouraged the club to apply for the grant. Jasper said the sewer line is connected and water is almost done.

The Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office reported 43 calls for services, no arrests and 14 citations. The citations were for cruelty to animals, theft, public nuisance, stop sign violations, operating a vehicle without an anti-lock breaks system registered, operating a vehicle in unsafe conditions, defective tail lamps, speeding and failure to have to operating headlamps.

Mike Smith with the public works department has been painting the curbs and started painting the fire hydrants.

During public comment, Solem reported he was approached by a citizen asking if they could have a breakdown on the water bill. Council members discussed conducting twice-yearly summary sessions.

The next regular meeting is set for Monday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m.
