Tribes Announce Fire Restrictions
The sale and lighting of fireworks on the Fort Peck Reservation is prohibited as of June 11. In a letter from Jamie McKee, acting superintendent for the U.S. Department of the Interior, to Fort Peck Tribal Chairman Justin Gray Hawk Sr., McKee wrote that due to high winds, fire personnel critically low and red flag warnings, fire restrictions are recommended by the BIA Fire Management for the Fort Peck Reservation.
Those fire restrictions include: No lighting of fireworks at any time; no trash burning or agricultural burning; no issue of burn permits from BIA fire management; no smoking except in closed building, vehicles and in designated smoking areas; no campfires allowed including in recreation areas; ceremonial fires must be attended to at all times with notification to BIA fire management; and all persons traveling on backroads are required to stay on established roads due to the increasing risk of fire danger.
The City of Wolf Point already had a ban of lighting of fireworks.
Roosevelt County officials has not taken action yet. For a county- wide fireworks ban, the county would need to approve stage one fire restrictions.
