Culbertson High School senior Dawson Bergum serves as the president in the school for both student council and FFA. He definitely had his family’s support for the positions.

“Both my sisters were presidents for them, so I decided to keep it in the family,” the son of Eric and Cassandra Bergum said of the positions. “We like to stay involved and help the community.”

Dawson explains the student council is currently involved with getting ready for Culbertson’s homecoming scheduled for Sept. 16-21. The student leaders are planning the parade, theme and dressup days.

As far as FFA, Bergum said his favorite event is livestock judging and he has qualified for the state meet in the event.

“I like being around the animals,” Bergum said. “It’s like being at home on the farm.”

He is looking forward to Culbertson hosting the livestock judging and vet science competition later this fall.

Bergum also enjoys competing in FFA’s agronomy events.

Bergum, who is a member of the National Honor Society, is a valuable athlete for Culbertson’s basketball and football teams.

He said basketball is his favorite sport.

“I’ve grown up playing it with my dad since I was 3 years old,” Bergum said of basketball. They often watch March Madness together.

He especially enjoyed last basketball season as the Cowboys were only fifth in the league during the regular season and then placed second at the district tournament.

“It was really fun and the fans were into it,” he remembered.

After graduating high school, Bergum plans to study farm and ranch management at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo. “I want to come back and farm hopefully with my father,” he said.
