Red Hawks Qualify For State Volleyball Tourney
With a state tournament berth on the line, the Froid/ Lake Red Hawks defeated Jordan in straight sets at the Eastern C divisional volleyball tournament in Sidney on Saturday, Nov. 6.
“The girls really rallied together on our team’s goals and preserved,” Froid/Lake Coach Kiah Smith said. “I’m unbelievably proud that these girls are able to say they are the first Froid/Medicine Lake Red Hawks to make it to state for volleyball!”
The Red Hawks won by a 25-15, 25-21, 25-22, final.
It makes the first time that Froid/Lake qualified for the state volleyball tournament as a co-op program. Medicine Lake qualified for the state volleyball tournament in 1991.
“Having the support of a strong assistant [Kyliee Hendrickson] was a huge asset to our success. Everyone played a role to our achievement,” Smith said.
In the first set, Froid/Lake gained a 14-10 lead on a spike and ace by Mara Salvevold, a kill by Dasani Nesbit and a tip by Baylee Davidson. After Jordan closed the score to 14-12, the Red Hawks struck with a tip by Jaeleigh Davidson and a kill by Nesbit. On Aleah Johnson’s service, Froid/Lake increased its advantage to 22-12 with kills by Carolyne Christoffersen leading the way.
A kill by Christoffersen ended the first set at 25-15.
Blocks by Nesbit led the Red Hawks to an 8-4 lead in the second set. After a kill by J. Davidson put the Red Hawks up 14-12, Salvevold served four straight aces for an 18-12 advantage.
Two kills by Nesbit and a tip by Meg Ator put the margin at 23-18. A kill by Christoffersen gave Froid/Lake a 24-19 lead en route to the 25-21 win.
The net play of Salvevold and J. Davidson helped Froid/ Lake grab a 12-10 lead in the third set. B. Davidson served an ace for a three-point margin.
After kills by Nesbit and Christoffersen produced a 17-12 advantage, B. Davidson’s block increased the margin to 20-13.
Jordan battled back to cut the gap to 22-21, but the Red Hawks accounted for three of the final four points on two kills by Nesbit and a kill by Christoffersen.
Leaders for the Red Hawks included Christoffersen with eight kills and Nesbit with five blocks. Salvevold served five aces.
Ator finished with 10 assists. B. Davidson had four digs.
The Red Hawks will open against Bridger at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Class C state tournament in Bozeman.
Other first-round matches feature Plentywood against Roy/Winifred, Fort Benton against White Sulphur Springs and Manhattan Christian against Simms.
