Red Hawks Open Tourney With Victory
The Froid/Lake girls’ basketball team stepped up in the second half to knock off Savage, 38-28, in the first round of the District 2C tournament in Sidney on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
The Red Hawks held a 1512 half-time advantage, but Savage tied the game on a pair of free throws by Finley Verhasselt with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter.
Froid/Lake’s Atley Jensen responded with the contest’s next four points on a drive and then a basket off a rebound. Laytyn Davidson fired in a three-pointer for a 23-16 advantage.
After Savage’s F. Verhasselt hit a three-pointer, Froid/ Lake’s Keira Stentoft knocked down a three-pointer for a 26-19 margin.
Two free tosses by Jensen and a three-pointer by Isabelle Nordwick were good for a 31-22 lead to end the third quarter.
The scoring of Aspen Peterson led the Warriors as Savage closed the gap to 3527 with 1:21 remaining in the game, but Stentoft then hit a free throw and Nordwick scored off an assist from Jensen to put the contest away.
Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Jensen with 14 and Nordwick with 12 points.
Also scoring were Stentoft with six, Avery Johnson with three and L. Davidson with three.
Jensen grabbed eight rebounds and five steals. Nordwick had six boards.
Savage’s top scorers were Peterson with 10 and KD Lyons with seven.
The game was deadlocked at 12-12 late in the second quarter until Jensen accounted for a three-point play with 1:07 remaining.
