Flag Football Teams Open Seasons
The girls’ flag football teams from Wolf Point and Poplar opened their seasons with a triangular against Glendive during games in Wolf Point on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The Wolves jumped out to a 33-0 half-time lead against Poplar and held off the Indians by a 39-18 final.
Wolf Point struck first on a pass play from Maci Fourstar to Harper Weeks for a quick 6-0 lead.
After a nice run by Kailayta Villaluz put the Wolves in scoring position, the Wolves reached the end zone on a pass from Fourstar to Addy Smith. The margin was increased by 13-0 when Smith ran in the conversion.
Sophie Ricker then accounted for an interception to put the Wolves back into scoring position. After a run by Fourstar to the three, the quarterback dashed in for a touchdown. A pass from Fourstar to Jorilynn Black Eagle was good for the conversion and a 20-0 advantage.
Smith, a junior, then intercepted a throw and raced the distance for another touchdown to put the margin at 26-0. Wolf Point’s final touchdown of the half came on a 25-yard run by Anna Matejovsky.
Poplar was able to bounce back to close the margin to 33-18 with 7:21 remaining in the contest. The Wolves then put the game away with a long scoring drive that featured a nice run by Matejovsky and a pass from Fourstar to Ma’Kenzie Jackson. The Wolves reached the end zone on a throw by Fourstar to McKinlee Paulson.
Wolf Point opened action with a 19-7 loss against a solid Glendive squad.
After the Red Devils led 12-0 at the half, the Wolves opened the second half with a drive featuring passes to Jackson and Matejovsky down to the Glendive 20. The threat, however, ended with an interception.
The Wolves gained momentum on an interception by Black Eagle at the Glendive 35. On a double-reverse play, Matejovsky raced the distance to put Wolf Point on the scoreboard. Fourstar passed to Paulson for the conversion to cut the margin to 12-7 near the end of the third quarter.
Another good run by Matejovsky and a pass to Cadence Bouldin put the Wolves within scoring range during the fourth quarter, but the Red Devils then accounted for an interception. Glendive went on to add a touchdown late in the game for the 19-7 final.
Poplar fell against Glendive by a 15-8 margin.
The Red Devils took an 8-0 lead in the first half on a touchdown and a safety.
An interception was among Poplar’s defensive highlights in the third quarter, but Poplar scored on a 10-yard run with 1:44 left in the game to increase its lead to 15-0.
The Indians ended the game on a strong note when Frankie Gourneau connected with Liberty Boadle on a touchdown pass. Gourneau hit Emily Ann Meyers for the conversion to close the gap to 15-8 with just a few seconds remaining in the game.
Poplar will host a triangular on Monday, Sept. 7.
