Tobacco Prevention News

October is Fire Prevention Month. This is a good time to remember the importance of smokefree homes.

In 2020, cigarettes caused nearly 40 home fires in Montana, two deaths and $1.3 million in property loss.

The best way to prevent such tragedies is to keep your home smokefree. If you rent or own a house, don’t allow smoking indoors. If you live in an apartment, ask your manager to adopt a smokefree policy that prohibits smoking inside and around the building.

Keeping your home smokefree also will protect family members, your pets and visitors from secondhand smoke exposure, which can increase their risk of cancer, heart and lung disease. Eliminating smoking also will protect your home from third-hand smoke, the dangerous toxins that can seep into furniture, carpets, drapes and even your walls.

If you want help to quit smoking, call the Montana Tobacco Quit Line at 800-QUIT-NOW (800-7848669), or visit QuitNowMontana. com. For information on smokefree housing policies, visit tobaccofree.mt.gov for fact sheets, sample policies and free smokefree signage.
