Bainville’s dedicated football players started practice under the guidance of new head coach Shawn Romo on Friday, Aug. 12.

Romo’s coaching experience includes serving as the junior high basketball coach for eight years. He also helped with Bainville’s football program in the past.

“I’m coaching for the kids. I enjoy coaching,” Romo said. “It seemed like an opportunity to coach at a higher level.”

Auggie Hollanda is serving as the team’s assistant coach.

The Bulldogs will open their season at home against Trenton, N.D., on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Romo sees Froid/Lake as the league favorite heading into the season. Savage, Wibaux and Richey/Lambert also have traditionally strong programs.

Bainville features 14 players this season. Adrian Anderson is the lone senior for the Bulldogs.

“We’re young overall, but it’s a good number,” Romo said.

A solid group of juniors highlight Bainville’s roster.

“There’s quite a few kids with a lot of experience,” Romo said.

Some of the top returning players include junior Charles Butikofer, junior Sam Butikofer, junior Cayden Boyd, junior Conner Wade and junior Logan Josephson.

Sophomores Reed Winn and Trevor Robertus also return for the Bulldogs.

One spot that the Bulldogs need to find a replacement for is at quarterback after the graduation of standout Jesse Strickland.

“We have some younger kids who are decent throwers,” Romo said. “There might be a mix of players.”

The squad’s athleticism is a strength. “We have a little height and that’s something that Bainville usually doesn’t have,” Romo said.

He notes the squad also works very hard.

“We lost a couple of seniors who were leaders. Guys need to fill new roles,” Romo said.
