The Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office responded to 86 calls from July 1-8. The incidents included: July 1 Deputies responded to the Fort Peck Community College in Poplar to investigate a transient who was possibly an unregistered sexual offender. The man said he was registered as an offender with the tribes. Deputies transported him to Wolf Point to get him registered in Roosevelt County.

With registration and turnout lower than anticipated in the primary election for Native Americans, Western Native Voice is aiming to increase voting enthusiasm this year. After a request from the Roosevelt County Fair Board, county commissioners are considering approving the purchase of a fence at the fairgrounds in Culbertson. The fence will be located on the east side of the fairground. Fair officials said the addition would result in the fair losing some parking, but the fence would make the area more secured. Some vandalism has been reported at the site.

The Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board held their full board meeting July 8. During Law and Justice, the board approved the Fort Peck Tribes, through the Fort Peck Tribal Court, to enter into a Tribal Professional Services Agreement and appoint Majel Russell as a special tribal prosecutor until Sept. 30. The Montana Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on a lawsuit over whether Gov. Greg Gianforte can claim “executive privilege” to withhold from the public internal records his office uses to track legislation.
