Scobey Stays Undefeated With Big Win Over Circle

The Scobey Spartans put on an offensive exhibit as they ran off 68 points to beat Circle, 68-26, for their homecoming football game on Friday, Sept. 18.

The Spartans’ firepower was apparent from the start when Quinn Axtman returned the opening kickoff to the Circle 39. On first down, Reese Tande connected with homecoming king Kolten Machart for a 24-yard gain to the 15. Two plays later, Tande passed to Asher Handran for a 15yard touchdown. Axtman ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Scobey then received a big special teams’ play when Handran recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Circle 10. After Machart battled to the one on first down, Axtman scored for a 14-0 lead with still 10:53 left in the first opening.

The previously undefeated Wildcats, however, then responded with a nice drive of their own. The passing of Owen Beery to Anson Taylor resulted in a quick first down. Runs by Taylor and Tripp Wahl moved the ball into Scobey territory. Circle went on to score on a 10-yard run by Kashus Ereaux. Beery passed to Taylor for the conversion to cut the margin to 14-8.

Axtman quickly gave Scobey the momentum back when the speedy sophomore returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the Circle 31. Scobey’s rushing attack highlighting Axtman marched down inside the Circle 10. After a run by Machart to the six, Tande found Blake Lekvold in the end zone to put the Spartans up 20-8 with 4:46 left in the period.

The Wildcats were forced to punt the ball after defensive stops were made by Torsten Lamb and Lekvold. The Spartans reached the end zone when Axtman raced 58 yards for a touchdown. Tande ran in the conversion for a 28-8 lead with 1:29 left in the opening quarter.

Circle’s next possession was a defensive showcase for Lamb as the senior made two tackles for losses and then a quarterback sack back to the three.

Scobey’s next touchdown was set up by a 34-yard pass play from Tande to Handran. From the nine, Axtman dashed in for another touchdown and a 34-8 lead.

After an interception by Handran, the Spartans scored on a four-yard run by Axtman. A conversion run by Axtman increased the margin to 42-8 with 6:37 left in the half.

The Wildcats struck late in the half on a 20yard pass completion from Beery to Ereaux to close the margin to 42-14.

Circle then opened the third quarter with a nice scoring drive that resulted in a touchdown pass by Beery to cut Scobey’s lead to 42-20.

After Circle’s defense stopped Scobey on its next possession, Scobey fans were getting a little uneasy until Machart intercepted a pass and went 30 yards for a touchdown. Machart ran in the twopoint conversion for a 5020 advantage.

The Spartans added two points when Lamb, who enjoyed an outstanding defensive game, made a tackle in the end zone for a safety.

Scobey went on to score on a four-yard run by Lamb as the Spartans moved ahead 60-20.

Circle’s Ereaux returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown to cut the margin to 60-26.

Scobey’s final touchdown came on a nine-yard pass from Tande to Cam Cromwell to open the fourth quarter.

The undefeated Spartans will host Ekalaka on Friday, Sept. 25.
